oh. i'm being too complimentary aren't i? was i supposed to say y'all suck? No rules, write the reviews you want to write, expect others to do the same. Discuss, retort, defend, exalt. I hope no one will have to defer to any other dominant culture. We are the mix that we are, right?

The way I look at reviews is this - A review is simply that, a review. It's not necessarily an opinion. If you venture too far on the opinion side it makes no sense as a review. It becomes your opinion.
Take this example. The reviewer is not a big fan of rap. Let's take a fictitious review on a Spintunes rap round song:
"This song sucked. It sounds too much like hardcore rap. The other songs didn't sound as much hardcore like this. I don't want to hear that kind of crap. Oh, and the vocals were hard to understand."
Let's examine.... First, since the fictitious reviewer hates rap guess what kind of review they are getting. Correct - a crappy review. See, you have to be bigger than the review. You have to do a review, not an opinion column. Anyone can say, "Yeah, the color red sucks!", but can you write a review, essentially controlling your opinions on the color red? Make sense?
To me, reviews are written to judge how a person wrote the song - Performance, Artistic Qualities, Song Form, Lyrics, etc... and yes - If the reviewer liked the song. Because essentially there is not much a review there if you don't like the song and can't explain why other than cheap pot shots. If you resort to that - the song is bigger than you are. If it were easier being a reviewer, anybody would be doing it ;-)

It becomes your opinion. Oh well - I won't use the word "review" again. I only do opinion. Hastily arrived at, ignorant, poorly considered opinion. Just like 99.9% of the listening public will give you. Treat it as such. BTW Dave - my hastily arrived at, ignorant, poorly considered opinion of your song was that it was cool. I voted for it. You was robbed. (you are the zombie dude right? Having trouble with all these new names) BTW Judges - although you #$%^ed up eliminating Dave - gotta say, you have done a hell of a job with those reviews. Lot of work gone into that. Good work all of you.

Good work all of you. Yes, I'm the zombie dude. Your opinion then is awesome. Honestly, I really do appreciate it. Reviews are reviews and opinions are opinions blah blah, but they all blur together is the way life works. I don't have a problem with opinions at all (especially when they are good opinions of my stuff). Your opinion is not ignorant. I didn't want to come across like that. I'm sorry. Man, I really appreciate your kind comments. It makes me feel better reading that after I cried myself to sleep last night. Ok, maybe I didn't... alright... cried just a little... BTW people - Not liking a song about zombies is one of the first signs of the zombie apocalypse. Way to go.

Your opinion is not ignorant. I didn't want to come across like that. I'm sorry. No - don't apologise. You didn't come across like that. My point is when I give opinions as I did earlier in this thread - they are 'ignorant' in the sense that I could not be arsed giving a 'review' as you described it. All I am putting out is my gut feeling to songs as I hear them. Just the way that 99% of listeners do when they hear a song and make that decision ... "good - listen / bad - click forward".

Yeah, I tell the Canadians the same thing, but only when I want to piss them off I agree about the backing music. My understanding is that his computer was broken, so he did this rather quickly at work without a real instrument.

Because Bobby's not an American, he's a Canadian from Newfoundland singing with an authentic Newfie accent. 'Fraid you get raked over the coals again. But hey! You blokes all sound the same to us, too. Well - technically, Canadians are Americans, just like Argentinians and Greenlanders are - but if the slang and accent does make sense in that context - then I offer Bobby my whole-hearted apology. The backing music is still pretty crap though. Actually, I think I owe him an apology, too! I said he was from Newfoundland, but it just hit me... I think I should've said Nova Scotia.
