Hey all, post your reviews here. What constitutes a team? A fight song?

I was surprised by the diversity of songs this round. I expected a lot of 'Rah Rah' chants and it instead was well thought out, and went to the edges of what might be considered DQ territory.
That made me smile.

So the challenge was to write a fight song for our favorite sports team. Clarification revealed that was, of course, no way the judges could verify whether a particular team was in fact our favorite, and could include fictional teams like "The Bad News Bears."
Several approaches were taken. First - several writers seemed to take the challenge at face value, writing about the mets, dolphins, USPS cycling,etc... A second approach was to choose non pro teams, like Joe's bar, or a kids soccer team. A third approach seems to have been interpreting the challenge to be "Write a fight song for a sport in which having a fight song seems sort of ridiculous, like chess, or an institution that wouldn't expect to have sports, like a mortuary school. The third was to bend the challenge so broadly as to include almost anything as "sport," like minecraft. I have my personally feeling on all of the approaches, and it will be interesting to see how the judges felt.
There is also the question of what constitutes a fight song.
Turboshandy - this seems to have been born of the idea that it would be funny to sing the name of this town. I can't actually make out what sport this song is about. i like the british isles feel which is very well done, been am on the fence about this meeting the challenge.
Glen Raph - well, unfortunately i fall into the chess is not a sport camp, at least in terms of this challenge. And although you can have a team of chess players, i don't really think chess qualifies as a team sport, per se, since it really is just a bunch of individuals tallied together. That having been said, the traditional fight song approach worked and there were some fun turns of phrase, but it didn't stick with me overall.
Jenny Katz. - a sport i have no familiarity with, thanks for including the notes. Another good british isles - ey thing. Well done, and I have to admit I am now curious to see what the heck this sport is about. Probable keeper.
Middle relievers - my favorite of the round. I believe that a bar softball team could easily be someone's favorite, and the vibe of this sounds just like the member s reallya re singing it together in a bar - good work.
Brian gray - this fits the ridiculous category, and while clever, seems to be written for the wrong challenge. I would probably cut this for that reason, but we'll see what the judges do. Songwriting and cleverness worked well.
SWG - this seems like a nice tribute to minecraft. In terms of this round as a competition around a certain challenge, I kinda feel like you went out of bounds. Also, the spelling bit seemed a little bit like stretching to meet the time challenge. Again, we'll see what the judges do and either way, you got another fun song you like :-)
RC - another one I think is sort of out of bounds, writing about fictional teams is different than writing about imaginary teams. i went to this schools website, and as far as I can tell, there are no sports. Built mainly around the "bury you" pun? Which is very clever.
Edric - creative idea, well executed. i just wish you emoted more :-)
Army defense - the idea to write about a very specific team is interesting. The Black Sox had crossed my mind. The style of the song proper may no be deemed a fight song by some. i personally dig it, it reminds me a lot of two of my favorite alternative bands from the late 90s - Monks of Doom, and The Ophelias- but the long recorded interview section is too much, and the song proper comes in under one minute - I fear this will be in the elimination group, unless others drop lower for challenge reasons.
Chocolate Chips - the indian style song for the indian team is cute. We all know how huge cricket is in India. Well done.
Kevin S R - high on my list. A great spirited song, and the "counterpoint" works fabulously. Good work.
Blimp exhaust - see previous comments about whether I feel chess meets this challenge. Ridiculousness level totally elevated ( in a good way) by the musical style.
Jerry Skids - Probably my second favorite. i haven't seen Baseketball, but this seems in the right spirit for it all. Well done.
Dr. l - I think I would have been more put off by this if not forthe fact that this entendre humor already pervades the school's sports culture. Given that, i think you did a good job and should be safe moving on. nice marching band composing stuff, too.
Steve Durand - this could easily take the round. A great sport, a team that captured the nation several summers in a row, current events, a marching band and chanting. Good song!
Buckethat bobby - so, two things here. One is this seems to be in the "what would be silly to write a fight song for" category. The other is bigger, I don't think this is really a fight song. It's a nice tribute and shows team spirit, but just doesn't seem like it is written to be sung by a crowd at a sporting event.
MC Ohm - i basically like this, but really wish it had a tune.
Josh H-W - a great spirited tribute to our champions. BTW, Edgar Allen Poe is one of Baltimore's most famous citizens and the Ravens are named after his most famous poem. Is this a fight song? It rides the fence. Lots of clever stuff, and about a real team, I think you'll be moving on.
Me - The cowboys really are my favorite team, and I wanted to be able to try to tie this in with my Americana style writing. I thought about avoiding Cowboys since so many people seem to hate them. I was thinking about Bad News Bears, but scrapped that after Travis published the suggestion on the web page. It was fun rockin my telecaster, playing some trumpet, and having all my friends chant on a Friday night. Cautiously optimistic about moving on.

Thanks for the reviews, Ross! Well thoght!
Just a quick FYI on the sport written about by both TurboShandy and Jenny Katz. The Brits call it football get really passionate about it in their uniquely British way, but we call it soccer.

As far as Jenny Katz, I feel like and idiot. In her notes where she wrote that her husband was obsessed with Arsenal, I assumed that was the name of the sport. Some weird thing with cannons being fired at each other, whcih sounds really cool. I mean, skots throw giant logs as a sport, right?
